No C drive
Posted by RC on March 16th, 2006

OK I know how to prevent this problem in the future, but I need to find a way
to fix what is there.

I upgraded a 2K machine by installing a second hard drive (D), installing a
NEW copy of XP Pro on D: and reinstalling all the applications, and then
removing the original drive (C. So my system partition is D:.

Now everything looked good, but as I install additional software I'm having
problems because they expect the system partition to be C:. I've programed in
the past and hard coding the system partition is just plain lazy, but I'm
stuck with it. The latest problem is the multi-function printer software, by
a well known PC manufacturer, not only is it hard coded for C: to be the
system partition but it will only install the application to the C: drive,
and I don't have a C: drive.

I'm desperate, does anyone know of a utility to reasign the system partition
drive letter without reinstalling everything?

As an FYI, MS doesn't consider this a problem with XP (I agree), but for the
printer Mfg to say it's not a problem with their software is a little far
fetched.

Thanks

If you want to use that printer it looks like you'll have to reinstall
Windows. I've run across this with estoric or custom software but never with
a major manufacturer. Would you mind letting us know the make and model so
we can avoid it?

I think I found a solution using a registry change by MS, and then Partition
Magic to repair the application links. A major pain but better then
reinstalling.

Its a Dell Photo 964

Thanks for the model #. I have have run into problems using that reg hack.
The system eventually became corrupted. I am not 100% certain of the cause
but suspect that something in the registry didn't get changed. Hopefully it
will work for you. Another possibilty if the C: drive has been physically
removed is the "subst" command in a logon script.
