- No Help Available?
- Posted by Ray19 on October 6th, 2005
I'm assuming there is no help available for the following question which I
posted here on 9/22? Does anyone have any suggestions on how I should proceed
to obtain a resolution?
"CAN'T CHANGE REGISTRY PER INSTRUCTION
I'm trying to modify the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected
Storage System Provider key of the Registry Editor in accordance with KB
Article 290684 to
correct a problem in Outlook. The Permissions for Administrators Full
Control and Read are both checked but dimmed which I assume means they are
not activated for this operation?
Anyhow, when I check the Replace option to go along with the already checked
Inherit option, in the advanced feature, and press Apply it doesn't take but
instead reverts back to the original checked Inherit option only. I assume
my desired action cannot be performed because I do not have Administrator
Permissions or because it's impossible to perform (which doesn't sound right
because it is a KB instruction)? Is this correct and, if so, how can I
perform the operation described? I am an individual home user and am listed
as a member of the administrators group under the Local Users file under
Computer Management in the Administrative Tools folder of the Control Panel.
I have tried everything I know to follow the direction of the above
referenced Knowledge base article for Windows XP - all to no avail. I'm
unable to successfully apply the "replace permission entries on all child
objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects" for The
Protected Storage System Provider Key. I can delete the user subkey, under
the Protected Storage System Provider key, but it always reappears and my
problem in Outlook remains.
I've really gotten quite a headache the last few days from this situation!
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, in advance, for any
input you may provide!
As a point of general information, my Outlook problem is the continuous
pop-up of "enter Network Password" whenever I press the send/receive button
in the Outlook menu to receive my e-mails."

Have you considered asking in one of the Office or Outlook groups? I'd
recommend the Outlook groups specifically. This is a group about performing
maint. work on your PC. When posting there, or replying here, you might want
to mention the actual problem near the top too as well as the version of
Outlook that you have installed. There's so many hits when searching for
site:microsoft.com outlook network password prompt that I wasn't able to
weed through them in any rational amount of time so knowing the version
would narrow that down perhaps as would looking for help in a more on-topic
group.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Galen. I'l follow your advice and place
my post in the Outlook group as you recommend. I thought that perhaps this
group would be familiar with changing the registry?
