No icons at boot
Posted by Joseph E. Johnston on January 17th, 2006

I'm running WIN XP SP2, fully updated, firewalled, virus protected & anti
spywared.Occasionally my computer boots to a clean screen-- no icons, no
task bar, no mouse pointer--- just my wallpaper.

I can hold the power button in to shut off and then restart the computer and
it boots normally.

So what's going on?

I have seen that a few times, however we have been busy enough that I have
not taken the time to dig into the issue, and it looks to be a while before I
could. The other item is it is intermittant.

However one thing that may help you avoid a reboot. Can you pull up a
CTRL-ALT-DEL window? If so you can pull up the task manager and force
EXPLORER.EXE to run, which will pull up the GUI, and avoid cutting the legs
out from under the system.

This has always worked for me on those machines where I have encountered
this issue. (I'd say off hand about 10 times or so).
