Occasional freezing for about 2 seconds, happens almost every 5 sec
Posted by Tony on November 25th, 2005

hi.i recently did a windows update and installed everything... now, when i'm
using the computer, i encounter occasional 2 second freezes in my system,
well, about 2 seconds i think... this happens almost every 5 seconds or so...
it's kinda annoying, i feel like using a 128mb memory equipped computer, i
have 512mb installed. also, i do't experience that with the other computers
which i haven't updated yet... is there something wrong with my setup? what
should i do?

What anti-spyware programmes are you using? If none try Adaware. Observe
the results and post a further message telling us whether the problem
has gone way.

If not installed download Adaware and / or update Reference file from
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and use it to remove
parasites.

Another approach is to use Process Explorer ( freeware ) to monitor
which running Process is using the CPU.

For further information about Process Explorer see here:
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/fr.../procexp.shtml

The problem will then be to identify the Application, which using the
process. There can be a number of applications using one process. If
come up with the Process we may be able to point in the direction of the
application.

Another way forward is to observe the effect of switching off in turn
programmes known to run continually in the background. Start with the
various components of Norton.

Check your setting for the Indexing Service. Start, Administrative
Tools, Services, Indexing Service. The default setting is Manual. Check
that it is not running.

A HijackThis report can also be informative but are difficult to
interpret them unless you have learnt by experience,
Download, install and run HijackThis.

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/htlogtutorial.html

I should mention that posting HijackThis logs to this newsgroup is
frowned upon. You can post them to specialist forums like
http://aumha.net/
but need to clean using more than anti-spyware programme before doing
so.
