PC shuts down instead of hibernating
Posted by smg on January 14th, 2006

For the past week, my PC has shut down when it was supposed to hibernate. It
has been set to hibernate after four hours for two years, but now, I use it
in the morning, leave it on, go to work, and it is completely off when I get
home. My power setting have been triple checked and have not been changed.
Windows update is turned on. Any thoughts on what this could be? Probably a
coincidence, but for a short time before this started happening, my computer
would sleep instead of hibernating.

Windows has no timed shutdown so I dont know whats happened. Are you sure its
not hibernating but on restart it doesn't load the info from the hibernate
file. Try turning off hibernating reboot and turn it back on. Double check
all your power options hibernate might be turned off. Here's a microsof
article for win2k but should apply to xp.

that might help

Thanks -- I'll try your suggestions, but it is definitely restarting. It
goes through all of the startup screens, the system tray gradually fills up,
and none of my apps are open.
