A very strange problem - maybe you folks could roll it around in yer
heads fer a bit?
I've been very pleased with my current setup - not anywhere a speed
demon, but stable and that's what I'm looking for. Had it for about a
year and it's been running really well, then I had a few problems - a
HD blew and I replaced it (rather had it replaced! lol), one stick of
the set of 2 OCZ 512 RAM's went and they replaced both sticks for me on
warranty. I think that's about all. However, lately it's been acting
up, much slower than usual(Windoze takes a *long* time to boot and drop
down menus are painfully slow for instance) and, as I'm no whiz by any
means I seek help. Last night I lost my wireless connection and after
verifying that it wasn't the cable co.'s fault, the system crashed and
would go no further than the Windoze splash screen before starting all
over again. (It would boot into safe mode but I saw nothing there that
helped). I took it into the local Ye Olde Shoppe this morning and right
away it booted fine and was steady as a rock <hmmm> And it was as fast
as it ever was!
I have it back again and it's working fine but still slow as an old
486. Some notes tho': It boots into Windoze *much* faster in the
shoppe than it does at home. They had only monitor, mouse & keyboard
connected as well as the USB “dongle” I brought in to connect to my
wireless network from home. I'm not running it in a sauna or anything
dumb like that but I do use a UPS (APC).
I can't think of anything that would be different in environments
between the shoppe and home that could account for these symptoms.
Startup has been reduced to only necessary items. I've run all the
cleaning I can think of Adaware, defrag, Nod32 Antivirus and all's fine
- besides it runs great at the techie's bench??? Bizarre.
Any ideas?? Thanks All!
James
