Look more closely. It's not IE7. It's your Windows Desktop and Taskbar.
Also, check your assumption that "all windows closed". Just because the
Desktop and Taskbar go away doesn't mean that running programs also
go away. E.g. you could still check on them using Task Manager (with
Ctrl-Alt-Delete instead of Ctrl-Shift-Esc) or switch to them using Alt-Tab.

You may get more informed help from a newsgroup which specializes
in diagnosing problems with the OS. Cross-posting to one for reference.
In any case, posters about problems related to IE7 are asked not to post
in the IE6 newsgroups but post in the internetexplorer.general newsgroup
instead.

BTW as PA Bear has already indicated, crashes in Module: unknown
are often symptoms of interference by incompatible third-party programs
(malware or otherwise.)

What changes have been made to software and hardware immediately before
the problem started? Have you recently added memory?

Explorer.exe is a parent. You can see the children listed using Process
Explorer. A list of the children might take analysis forward.

Process Explorer provides more information than Task Manager.

Download Process Explorer.

For further information about Process Explorer see here:
