I have a similar setup:
K7S41GX, Sempron 2200+ 1500 Mhz
Western Digital WD400BB-00JHA00
It was especially slow to boot while detecting the IDE devices (about
20 seconds). It only has a single hard drive and a single cdrom.
Changing the harddrive from master to cable select made the ide device
detection instantaneous.
Even more strange, I was only fiddling with the setting to get Windows
2000 to install. Prior to switching the hard drive to cable select,
installation would hang at "Setup Is Starting Windows 2000".
