repair XP Home, won't let me, says current version is newer than C
Posted by Red Dog on February 5th, 2006

I re-labeled my cd drive and since then...my mmc does not work at all, no
computer management at all,....can't defrag, etc. When I click on start,
right click my computer and select manage, I get an error message saying I
can't open the file.....c:...system32/cmpmgt.msc

So, thinking that best approach (avoiding a reformat if possible) is to
repair windows.

Ok, but how do you repair XP? In my case I have XP Home and it is updated
with all current updates, ie. SP2. When I put in my XP disc and click on
install, it says that my current version is newer than the disc and I can't
get it to repair. Anyone know of a workaround?

Its a simple task,install xp cd,exit the menu page,restart computer,boot
to xp cd,at xp cd boot menu, select install xp,repair this copy.

Thanks! The 'slipstream' bootable CD did the trick!

Wrong again simpleton. He needs to create a slipstreamed XP CD with SP2 or
uninstall SP2 from ADD/Remove.

than not; following his advice will cause you to lose all your data.

Setup cannot continue because.....newer...version.

Michael, I did figure out from another post that one option was slipstreaming
one CD bootable. Only wish I knew about your link to the program
'autostreamer'...would have saved some time.

I now realize that the first answer was not THE solution,....I just had
slipstreaming with SP2 already on my mind and did a quick reply,....which
would have confused others reading this thread.
