screen hangs frequently for several seconds

screen hangs frequently for several seconds: Posted by *Toby* on May 15th, 2006; Using Windows XP SP2 - Word 2003 - Outlook Express 6. Have defragmented and
removed all temporary files. The hangs happen using Word and Outlook Express.
Can anyone suggest what is causing this to happen/how to stop this happening
