After automatic "security update" on 4/12/06, I am experiencing problems with
MS Excel. Trying to "save as" results in application hang, and error report
to MS.

It seems that the update KB908531(Windows Explorer security update) has
caused this problem throughout MS Office when you try to open files or save
files to/from any Folder/Folders. I uninstalled KB908531 and the problem was
solved. However I am still looking for a remedy to apply after installing
KB90853.
