Slow Bootup on New Computer
Posted by khenry_sd on October 28th, 2005

Hello,

I just bought a new computer 2 days old:
AMD Athlon 64/3200
7800gt vid card
1gb RAM
XP pro (SP2)

The only program I installed was my World of Warcraft Game. Now when I
power on my computer everything boots fast to the desk top. However this is
wher the hangup is. It takes about 1 1/2 minutes (I counted) for the final
parts too load/boot? The last 2 program/hardware that loads is the Windows
Security Manager & the Nvidia Firewall program. Is 1 1/2 minute a normal
load time from boot and for my desktop to be fully acessible? Within this 1
1/2 min time I cannot access my login icon on my desktop to enter my login
info and the other normal functions wont work... Otherwise the appearance of
the desktop makes it seem everything is fine. Wouldnt have noticed the
problem except the delay to select my internet login. Hope this is clear. I
just dont understand how a brand new topline computer takes over 1 1/2 minute
to load everything once it hits desktop from boot.

How does your computer match these system requirements?

Have you run Disk CleanUp and Disk Defragmenter?

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. Not sure why I would run disk cleanup & defrag on a
brand new 2day old system. Everything is New and fresh installed. Just
seemed a bit annoying to take 1 1/2 mins to load the final 2 prog/hardware on
the sytem tray w/ a fast processor and new comp. I did install the Window
updates & restarted.... I think thats when I noticed the time lapse.
Hopefully I can go home today and work w/ it. There were only 4 programs
running in startup (msconfig) along w/ my shortcut to my login prompt for my
DSL connection. I had to add that there so I can know when the 1 1/2 min is
up & my login prompt comes along. I have no experience w/ the Nvidia
hardware Firewall & I'm farely new to the Windows Security Manager feature w/
SP 2, I hope that's not causing the problem.

Whenever you make significant system changes ( install updates ) or
install programmes you should run Disk Defragmenter. Disk CleanUp is
just a preliminary preparatory process.

If you do not require advice don't ask!
