Slow hibernate
Posted by silvain on October 4th, 2005

For some time, I can no longer use hibernate because it takes ages -
20 minutes instad of the usual 30 seconds.

I did not found any solution to this problem from computer specialists
or on the internet. My disk is only very moderately fragmented and
Windows does not mention hibernfil.sys among fragmented files. So the
problem should be somewhere else...

Windows XP, 512 Mo RAM, 60 GB = 16 + 44 partitions HD
Acer TM 660 Notebook computer

First I'd like to point out that you're using a forum interface to access
the newsgroups. This isn't a forum but rather the Microsoft Public
Newsgroups. In the forum you may not get all the responses nor be able to
follow-up as easily or as well as you can with a newsreader client.

Access MS Newsgroups :

Now, if you'd like you can try deleting the hibernation file and then
rebooting and enabling it again. I'm not sure that the rebooting is
nessessary but it's worth a shot. The way to do this would be to open up the
power settings from your control panel, disable the hibernation by unticking
the option to allow it and clicking okay or apply. After that I'd reboot -
just to do it if for no other reason - and enable hibernation once again.

The time that it's taking, is it to shut down or to come back up? I'd take a
look at running processes and services and consider checking the system for
malware if the above doesn't work for you.

How much free space is left on your drive? Hibernation takes up the amount
of your RAM - and also needs some space to work while it does it.

I have now about 3.3 Go free space on C:
It did sometimes came down to 1.5 Go over these past weeks.
I did a defragmentation yesterday (although Windows says it was not
necessary).
I tested the problem again just now : 13 minutes to hibernate, and 30
seconds do wake up.

Thanks for your concern.
It would be so nice to solve the problem...
