- Slow opening of My Computers
- Posted by Karla Leavelle on April 26th, 2006
Within the last week my computer in general was slowing down. Briefly, my
IE was slow and would not allow me to type in a url and go that page, but I
could select a favorite and get to other web pages. I performed a Disk
Clean-up, and now IE seems to work OK. But when opening My Computer, the
flashlight searches for about two minutes before opening the file list.
I ran msconfig, disabled everything and still had the problem. I also ran
AdAware and run AVG Virus scan daily. About the time the slowdown began,
AVG found three viruses but indicated it deleted them. The next day it
found three viruses in a restore folder and deleted them. Since then, it
has found no viruses.
Other strange behavior is that AOL Instant messenger once popped-up
suddenly.
I'm running XP, with Service Pack 2 and IE 6.0.

See if this link helps.

Your system might still be infected, Also download and run SPybot and
you could do an online virus scan as well.
Check the drive for fragmentation, if u havent dont it in a while, that
could another reason for slowdown. Run the disk defragmenter.
Go to start>Run> Ms Config and disable unnecessary progrms.

I've tried everything you suggested, perhaps with the exception of disabling
unnecessary programs, as I don't know which are necessary. I have disabled
all the files under the Start-up tab and that didn't seem to help.
But I defragged the disc, disabled the Windows Image Acquisition program the
Microsoft article suggested, and unplugged a recent HP printer I bought but
still the problem remains. I downloaded Spybot and ran it and deleted all
the files it suggested, including one that had "SP2 update" in the name.
Any other suggestions?
