- Sound problems
- Posted by Melissa B on January 29th, 2006
I'm not sure why, but the sound has suddenly stopped working for me. I tried
going through the trouble shooters and all of that, but nothing has helped.
I looked through the device manager and everything is working fine. However,
when I tested the sound in dxdiag, I got a "Failure at Step 19 (User
verification of software): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code). I tried
reinstalling the latest version of DirectX, but that didn't help either. I
have SoundMax Digital Audio, if that helps. The driver version is
5.12.1.3044, and Windows didn't find any updates for it. I'm using Windows
XP Home with SP2 installed. Any help would be very much appreciated.

I looked through that, as well the additional sound articles, but it doesn't
look like any of them will help. I also did a search for the DirectX error I
got, and I didn't find anything...and what's really weird is that when I
unmute my microphone, I can hear my voice from the speakers! No other sound
is working though. Should I just reformat?

Obviously your Microphone volume is up and working.
Try unplugging your microphone and see what happens.
Open Volume Control...
Start | Run | Type: sndvol32 | Click OK |
Options | Properties | Show the following volume controls: |
Under Playback make sure that you have at least
Play Control
Wave (Windows sounds use this)
MIDI
CD Audio (If you have a CD drive)
You may have more.
Show the following volume controls:
[[Displays the devices on your system whose sound you can control. Click to
adjust the volume for each device.]]
Close Properties, back in Play Control...
Make sure that no Mute is selected.
Make sure that the volume slider is up for everything.

you can also try : control panel | sound and audio devices |click the audio
tab, make sure your 'default device' for 'sound playback' and 'sound
recording' are the same, this should work.

Had a similar problem. No need to format. Try and re-install the drivers for
your board and soundcard first.

I now have the same problem. I can't reinstall as I can't find the
installation disk provided by Dell. I can't get Neons earlier suggestion to
work as my PC doesn't recognise sndvol32 when I type it in the "run" box.
