Suspected Bad Sectors?
Posted by on March 29th, 2006

I use Norton to defrag. Every time, I get more and more "unmovable"
files. Have know idea what they are. I suspect bad sectors. The
drive is 5 years old.

How do I use CHKDSK?
to find out fi there are bad sectors?

WITHOUT
ruining any of my programs or data?

How to view the Chkdsk Log Entry:-
You will find the chkdsk log entry in the Application log of Event Viewer.
To access the Event Viewer
.. Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools> Event Viewer > Application.
.. Look for the Event from the source "WinLogon".

The unmovable files in Defrag would most likely be files with the
"system" attribute set. They would not be bad sectors.

To run CHKDSK on the entire disk open a Command Prompt window (Start -
Run - CMD) and enter the following command:

CHKDSK C: /R

Choose the option to run the scan the next time the computer starts
up. Then shut down and restart your computer and go for a long
leisurely lunch (or do this overnight - it will take a while).

Good luck
