System locks on file copies
Posted by Brian S on May 14th, 2008

When I try to copy directories of files to an external drive the copy window
comes up with a overly large length of time remaining (180+ minutes) and
shows the files flying to the new drive and the external drive's light starts
to flash. After awhile the external drive's light stops flashing but the
copy window is still flying files and the length remaining is still high but
stays put. Nothing changes for a period of time.

When I try to stop the process the computer locks up. After a re boot I can
look at the external drive and all the files have been copied.
The drive that I am copying from is an array of 4-80 GB drives. The disk
test shows no problems.

After moving files off the array I formatted this drive, moved the files
back, and I'm still encountering the same problem.

Any Thoughts?

Do you have the same behavior if you use XCopy from a command line? I
quit using Explorer for copying directories after it said it would take
days to copy 60+ GB of files. XCopy did the same in hours and I created
a script to automate the procedure where it only copies new or changed
files.

I haven't tried the XCopy yet, but after I updated to Service pack 3 the
problems stopped for now.
