A box appears and says "System restore is not able to protect your
computer--please restart and run system restore again".
I will know later if this works..

Hi Miklos,
Reinstalling System Restore should repair the problem.
Note: All restore points will deleted in the process.

Hi Miklos,
If you continue to experience problems with System Restore, take a look at
Event Viewer for any System Restore logs that may have been created recently
that may help us diagnosing the problem.
Go to Start - Run and type eventvwr.msc and press enter.
Click on System in the left pane.
Click the gray title "Source" at the top of the source name column in the
right pane to sort by source name, look for "sr" and "srservice".
Double click on each of these events, then click on the button below the two
arrows in the upper right corner. This will copy the event information to
the clipboard. Paste the information for each of the two event here.
How do I use the Event Viewer to search for System Restore logs?

Hello, I've been noticed the same problem (right down to the error code
104 in the event viewer) the last week or so as I tried to use system
restore so I did a search and tried the solution suggested at that
link.
What is really strange is I have 2 separate computers with the same
problem...did one of windows updates screw things up as this is too
much of a coincidence?
I tried the solution at berts link, (I originally had the sp2 via MS
download) so when I get to installing sr.inf I point it to the
C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder and it sees sr.inf but then
gives a copy error for the next file srclient.dll and all subsequent
files. Tried directing back to the i386 folder for each but no success.
Before I found this forum I had given up and tried uninstalling
sp2/reinstalling which didn't work, then I finally formated and
installed winxp from scratch on the other system but that isn't an
option on my main computer.
Ideas on how to proceed next and any input on why we are seeing this
error suddenly?
Thanx in advance

Please post a copy of the Error Report. There will be variants with
Event ID: 104.
You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event
ID, Source
and Description are important.
HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp
A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your
message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make
sure this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Have you installed a new hard drive or changed your drives around?
Right click on your My Computer icon on your Desktop and select
Properties, System Restore. What is the Status for each drive listed?

I get a "Run a DLL as an App" error when I click 'system restore' after
the other steps. When I click more information it has "error
signature...appname rundll32.exe appver 5.1.2600.2180
modname:srrstr.dll modver: 5.1.2600.2180 offset:000099b2"
I have recently connected another external hd via firewire/usb to make
a backup using maxtors drive copy utility but it isn't connected
anymore..shipped it back to vendor due to faulty cooling fan on case.
I notice in the following also listed in the event viewer:

You got me thinking so I reinstalled a former hd and I don't have the
disk error in the event anymore, don't have the 104 error for the
srservice anymore either but system restore still does the same error
when I try to use it. Also now have a different error and there are
many 'information' events listing service control manager and a variety
of numbers.
As far as the hd it was a 160gb maxtor hd , ata100, formated w NTPS
format in one partition. has always been. The 2nd drive was a 60gb
maxtor ata 100 formated NTPS and one partition. Also, although no other
hd is listed under Hard Disk Drives in My Computer, in the device
manager if I turn on my photosmart hp printer it lists the card reader
as a Disk drive.
Most recent error :

I followed Microsofts instructions for this most recent error and type
the following at the command prompt:
sc query FileSaver_Service
and it spit back:
Service_Name: FileSaver_Service
Type: 10 Win32_Own_Process
State: 1 Stopped
(NotStoppable,NotPausable,IgnoresShutdown)
Win32_exit_code: 1084 (0X43c)
Service_exit_code: 0 (0X0)
Checkpoint: 0X0
Wait_hint: 0X0
Is this any help?

As far as the hd it was a 160gb maxtor hd , ata100, formated w NTPS
format in one partition. has always been. The 2nd drive was a 60gb
maxtor ata 100 formated NTPS and one partition. Also, although no
other
hd is listed under Hard Disk Drives in My Computer, in the device
manager if I turn on my photosmart hp printer it lists the card reader
as a Disk drive.

Primary Drive is C:
A 160gb Maxter ata100 2mb buffer with 1 partition for the whole drive.
Secondary Drive is D:
A 60gb Maxter ata100 2mb buffer with 1 partition for the whole drive.
Not sure I am understanding what info you want if that isn't it?
The 'filesaver' event was caused by an energizer ups I recently
installed including software and then removed. I edited the registry to
clean all references to it and now there are NO ERRORS in the event
logger, however, system restore still gives the same problem when I
click on it, that being:
A box pops up "System Restore Application, System restore application
has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience....."
I click on the link in the box and another box pops up:
"System Restore Application - Error Signature
AppName: rstrui.exe AppVer. 5.1.2600.2180 ModName: srrstr.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 00009826
To view technical information about the error report click here..."

I had a very similar (if not identical) problem recently, my problem started
when I installed a new 120GB Maxtor drive using the MaxBlast utility program
to migrate my original drive data to the new drive.
Quite simply -- MaxBlast does not work in every instance. In my specific
case (I found out from Maxtor tech support) it does not work for Dell
computer drives that have a small "EISA partition" (which holds some machine
data that Dell puts on their units). Something in the operating system seems
to be aware of this partition and looks to it for certain data -- but I
couldn't find out how to make my new drive behave the same way.
My solution was to re-partition the drive, wipe it clean, and install over
again from the original XP disk. I guess I could have tried using PC
Relocator (or some such) to migrate my applications and data over from the
old drive.
Failed attempts to fix the problem included installing XP-SP2 ... or rather,
not installing it, because 95% of the way through it burped out "oops, can't
complete, now I'm going to waste another 30 minutes of your life removing
the files I just installed" (or words to that effect).
HTH.
