- system slowed after upgrade
- Posted by revgene on December 14th, 2005
6 weeks ago, I reformatted my hard drive, installed Windows ME and upgraded
to XP Professional with Service Pack 2. Next I installed office professional
2003. Then I reloaded programs and file. I have been running Norton
antivirus, antispyware from the start. Since the upgrade, all programs take
10 times longer to open. My internet connection is a little slower but that
is a secondary concern for the moment.
I have frequently gone into msconfig and taken everything off of start-up
except Norton AV. I am wondering if there are ‘things’ in the old Windows ME
that are running that can be removed.
My computer is a Dell, about 6 years old with a Pentium III processor
running at 863 mghz. I have a 128 MB of ram and 40 gig of hard drive.
I welcome any suggestions

Hello there, I am not sure aobut your case but Nortan has made computers slow
sometimes.
but it could be you having 128MB of RAM too, if you can, you can take your
PC to a local PC shop and ask for an up grade on the RAM, maybe about 256MB
to 512MB would make the computer run better,
I say that your Processor should be an okay speed for Win XP, (But on here
has 1.4GHz so I would think it will run okay)
overall it also could be how you installed every thing.
But you could try upgrading your RAM.

"My computer is a Dell, about 6 years old with a Pentium III processor running at 863 mghz. I have a 128 MB of ram..."
That's your problem.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring Task Manager and select the Performance Tab.
What is the Total, the Commit Charge and the Peak?
How large is your hard drive? Is it partitioned? How much free space on each
drive / partition. How is the drive formatted -FAT32 or NTFS. To get this
information whilst in Windows Explorer place the cursor on each drive in
turn, right click and select Properties.
Look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for Warning and
Error Reports and post copies here.
You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, Event
Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding
Event ID, Source and
Description are important.
HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=winxp
A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.
Try Start, All Programmes, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to Empty
your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Delete all but the
most recent Restore Point ( Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk
Cleanup, More options). Run Disk Defragmenter by selecting Start, All
Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter.

Hope this helps.

Gerry,
Thanks for your detailed response to my question. Here are the answers to
your inquiries.
Hard Drive is 40GB
Available space is 31.3 GB
It is not partitioned
Formatted FAT32
Under Task Manager
Commit Charge Total 242068
Peak 252432
However several times in the past I’ve seen it maxed out.

Hoodcom,
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I've closed Norton from time to time but it only
helped marginally at best.

Tanks for your reply. Do you think adding more RAM will be enought to make
the computer run as fast as it did before (with Windows ME)?

More RAM will help - you need at least 512MB for acceptable performance. But more RAM will do little good if you have a slow hard disk, so you'll need a faster hard disk. But even then you're still dealing with a slow processor and video subsystem. Check out the cost of upgrading and you'll see it's not worth it. Get used to be slow. You can help yourself by turning off as many of XP's visual effects as you can, and using older software.

You're Commit Charge and Peak considerably exceed your RAM memory. You need
at least 256 mb and preferably more to avoid overdependence on the pagefile.
This is why your machine has slowed. Reading and writing to RAM memory is
much quicker than to and from virtual memory. You need to consult your
motherboard manual to determine how much RAM memory can be installed and
what type. Do you have the Manual?

in addition about the manual thing, if you don't have the manual, you can go
here:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/include/h...ory_config.asp
Just select what system type and ect. and it will bring up what kind of ram
type your PC should handle, it should be listed since Dell made your PC.
but you may want to find how much RAM max it can handle, like 1GB or
something.
