Task Manager/FOUR (4) Processors shown
Posted by Thomas on April 5th, 2006

Some insight, please. Am running a workstation w/ dual P4 Xeons @ 2.8GHZ
each & Win XP Pro on one hard drive (among six SCSI HDs). On another HD, I
have Win 2000 Pro installed. Task Manager shows TWO (2) Xeons just fine when
using W2K Pro, but TM shows FOUR (4) processors when using the HD w/ Win XP
Pro as the O/S. Any way to remedy this? Thanks.

Do the Xeons have hyperthreading? This is normal with hyperthreading
enabled.

Both are indeed Hyperthreaded and the feature is enabled. I can see your
point that it's normal since HT emulates a second threading, although not the
same way as the new "dual-core" processors. I wonder if the new dual-core
processors have eliminated HT or if they will show up as four in Task Mgr.?
Thanks for the info.

My understanding is that when dual core hypertheading CPUs are available
then two would show up as 8 CPUs in task manager.
