Trojan virus hijacked my background settings(Win XP Pro)
Posted by Kid Dynomite on January 20th, 2006

I think my background settings have been hijacked in the display properties
window. First I had an alert which prompted me to downlaod microsoft software
to remove spyware, then the alert was cleared but not before the background
image was changed to another alert. Blue background with a black banner
telling me to 'stop and remove spyware before proceeding', I thought it was a
put there remotely. Then some anti-pest, or something like that started to
scan my computer prompting me to pay some money to remove that stuff, I went
to the search through explorer and removed the background, it was in my
display windows, desktop, removed the file "desktop" and the banner is now
gone, the various software spyware and ad-ware programs have assured me that
there is nothing on my harddrive. Now when I returned to the display window
to change my background to what it was before, the section under the display
window is frozen, I can not change the propertuies just under 'Desktop'.
I think the trojan was some sort of 'Theme' that has frozen certain
attributes of the desktop....can you help to restore my system?

Kid,

What spyware removal tools are you using? I found that some may be better
than others in removing HiJackers. I've had success with "Webroot Spysweeper"
it's on CNET.Com as a free download. Others I have spoken to have had success
with "Hijack This" although I haven't used it. As for the "desktop" file that
you removed, I don't know what that might have affected on your system.
