When the computer shuts down i get
shutting down
installing update 1 of 1


it wont go away..
any ideas?

Just keep waiting. One of those took almost 25 minutes for me a couple
of months ago. I don't remember which one though. It is VERY annoying
when you want to hit the hay and your computer won't turn off.

Windows Update, Review your Update History and click on the Failed Icon
(if any) in the Status Column. What does it say for the failed update??
