Very Slow Startup!!!
Posted by Ratmuffin on March 31st, 2006

For sometime now my computer has been suffering very slow startup times. The
actual boot-time is fine, but its when the exporer shell loads that half the
system seems to have freezed for about 3 minutes. The taskbar brings up the
hourglass when you hover over it, seemingly frozen. I can access My Documents
through the desktop shortcut, but My Computer brings up an empty folder until
the rest of Windows catches up.

I've just loaded the BootVis application, which improved the initial boot
time, but not the loading of windows. Checking its log, I discovered a
massive 157 second loading time for the Logon & Service part!! When that
firsts starts loading, the processes that coincide with it are nod32kui.exe
(240), soundman.exe (236), atimdxx.exe (228), syntpenh.exe (216),
syntplpr.exe (208), explore.exe (1924).

Minutes later, the final processes load - cisvc.exe (1468),
inetinfo.exe(1520), nod32krn.exe (1588), slserv.exe (1704), svchost.exe
(1764), wdfmgr.exe (568), imapi.exe (684), wscntfy.exe (2120), wscntfy.exe
(2124), alg.exe (2200) then wuauclt.exe (2960) at the +215 mark.

I'm guessing there's a service thats causing this slow startup, but I'm no
expert and not sure what I should do next.

My notebook is running XP SP2 and its networked to an older machine running
Win Me. I can't remember if this problem occurred with the installation of a
program, and my System Restore will not fix it either. I'm out of ideas, can
anyone help?!?
