- What does hibernate do?
- Posted by amyjoel on January 18th, 2006
I have been having hard drives crash like crazy lately. I have a cable modem
and leave my computer on all the time without using the hibernate or standby
options. Should I be doing an automatic hibernate to help this problem?

Hibernate is like a partial shutdown. Not only does is save on the power
bill, it also makes it a little harder for someone to get access to your
computer. Of course, it's still safer to shut down when not using your
computer for a long period of time, if not at least do a stand by or
hibernate. As to what is causing your frequent crashes...could be an
internal problem or something/someone dickering from outside. It wouldn't
hurt at all to shut down, stand by, or hibernate when not in use. Also, if
your computer software contains a self diagnostic program, try it. It'll let
you know what may be wrong or improved on, with instructions or at least
where to go for them.... Good luck...
