Why does my screen reduce so small when coming out of sleep mode? Its got
like a 2" black border around the whole thing.

Not enough information.
Have you tried updating your video card driver from the manufacturer of said
video card?

No I have not tried that. This system is like 5 years old and has never had a
problem before. It just stated doing this a couple days ago when it wakes up
from going into "stand by" mode... it comes back with the desktop screen
much smaller and that border all around it.
I have no clue how to update my video card.

You must know what vide card you have. Look on your receipt/invoice for
the computer - ask the people you bought the system from, open it up and
look, etc.
There are applications out there that can identify what hardware you have,
but I think they all depend on a properly installed system - as I think they
pull the information from the registry. Perhaps they do not - so I will
recommend you try one..

Once you know what you have, what next? Go get the latest driver for your
hardware/OS from the manufacturer's web page. For example, let's say you
have an NVidia chipset video card or ATI video card.....

I will see what I can find out but I have been using this system since like
1998 and have no clue where the receipt is for it.

Do you get a complete screen when you first start up the computer? Is it
just when you return from sleep mode?

Yes, I get a normal screen most of the time when I first start up the
computer. Once in awhile I get this fuzzy screen full of gray "pixles" that
slowly one by one disappear until the screen is black and I have to do a hard
shut down and restart and its fine... sometimes if I close my lap top's
lid most of the way and open in a few seconds, it goes back to normal.
But this coming out of sleep mode to a minimized desktop with a 2 inch black
border is completely new and only happens when its gone into standby if I
have been away for awhile.
