Windows Explorer display anomalies in XP
Posted by Ken on November 3rd, 2005

I have uncovered a strage anomaly in Windows Explorer (XP) with HTML files.

I have shared directory on a server that has 8,000+ HTML objects linked to
images.
When I open Windows Explorer and navigate to this folder, Windows Explorer
does not immediately recognize the files as HTML. after a few seconds it
starts refreshing the ICON to an "IE" style ICON. Scrolling down the file
list one can watch the ICONS refresh until the end. What is really
interesting is when I try to scroll up, The whole refresh sequence starts
over again.

I have tried tweaking options in the performance area in system properties
with no avail.

What is even more interesting an identical piece of hardware loaded with
Windows 2000 Pro does not exhibit this issue. All HTML ICONS are are
displayed immediately as "IE" ICONS.

What am I missing here? Is there something I can tweak in the registry to
get XP's Windows Explorer to immediately cache the identity of these HTML
files?
