WinXP Boot Time
Posted by jimbo on March 5th, 2006

I have tried all of the obvious "tricks" to reduce the time it takes
to boot WinXP, but it still takes 2 min and 4 seconds from "push power
button" until WinXP is ready to use.

Anyone have any suggestions?

How does this boot time compare with other folks?

Thanks for any insight, jimbo

2 minutes does not sound like the end of the world
but you could look here if you haven't already

Please give us more data.

1. Are you using any Norton AntiVirus/Security products? (This will add 10
to 30 seconds on many systems.)
2. What is the model/speed of your CPU? (If your CPU is less than 1 GHz, 2
minutes is not too bad.)
3. How much RAM does your system have? (If you have less than 512 MB, 2
minutes is not too bad.)
4. Are you using any real-time spyware protection? (This will add 10 to 30
seconds on many systems.)

Do you have unneeded items in your Startup? The fee program below will allow
you to view ALL of the startup items in your system.

How much memory do you have installed?.. how many programs start
automatically?.. are all of your devices reporting as ok?.. what CPU is
installed?.. how much memory does your video card have?.. is your hard drive
an old small one, or a new large fast access drive?..have you checked for
spyware and viruses recently?..

Thanks for the replies. I have a 2.4 GHz P4, 1 GB RAM and a 200 GB,
7200 RPM hard drive (Western digital WD2000JB). Nvidia GeForce4 Ti4200
AGP8X video card has 128 MB. The only thing I have purposely running
at startup is NOD32 anti virus. I regularly run Ace Utilities and Ad
Aware and SpyBot. I think the system is clean, but two minutes seems
like a long time to boot.

Thanks, jimbo
