- XP Pro won't defragment

Windows Xp Pro won't defragment any of my drives. When i go into the
properties and select tools and choose to defrag, i click on it and nothing
happens. No pop-ups, no errors, nothing happens. Any ideas? Thank
you............

hii, check if windows management instrumentation (wmi) services are running
you can do that by going to services (type services.msc in startmenu run) if
the services are not enabled or started set these services to automatic and
start! you shoud be having a working defrager check!.
pls remember not to disable any services you dont know about. these services
are required and used by windows by disabling them you will disable not only
that service but also the dependent applications and services, in your case
defragmentation.

Nothing happens when clicking on Defragment or Analyze.
Defrag with XP SP2 needs the DCOM Server Process Launcher service running.
Click Start, Run and type SERVICES.MSC
Double-click the DCOM Server Process Launcher service
Set it's startup type to "Automatic"
Restart Windows.

This fix worked for me. dfrgntfs.exe was crashing. Both from defrag.exe in
a command prompt and dfrg.msc.
Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 dfrgui.dll | Click OK
Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll | Click OK
Navigate to...
%windir%\inf | Right click dfrg.inf | Select Install

dfrg.inf should be in %windir%\inf or C:\WINDOWS\inf
If it is not, dfrg.inf is on your XP CD listed as DFRG.IN_ in the I386
folder. The underscore (_) means that the file is compressed. The
compressed file needs to be expanded to be of any use. To expand it to the
proper location...
Insert your XP CD into your CD drive and enter (Copy and Paste) the
following command into the Start | Run box:
EXPAND -R D:\I386\DFRG.IN_ C:\WINDOWS\inf
Hit your ENTER key or click OK.
NOTE :
You have to change these if yours are different...
Change D to = your CD drive letter
Change C to = your hard drive letter

%windir% is an environment variable that is the location of the system
folder.
Typing or pasting %windir% into the Start | Run box opens to the Windows
folder on whatever drive it is located. I.e. C:\WINDOWS or C:\WINNT.
Windows XP can be installed in either WINDOWS or WINNT.
