Xp Shutdown Auto Update Problem
Posted by Bob M. on October 1st, 2005

Hello all,

I have Windows XP Home edition that will not RESTART or SHUTDOWN. It
freezes and never shuts down. When I turn off Auto Update and BIT and it
does shutdown and re-boot.

Also when I go to Microsoft Updates using Internet Explorer, It freezes at
the web page with no results displayed. I have disabled the update and BIT
service, deleted the Winnt\software distribution sub-dir and then turned
back on. The sub-dir does get re-created but then the system does not shut
down again.

It sounds like you have driver or background applications that are causing
your problems.
