- All in one that takes compatible inks
- Posted by Simon Finnigan on January 13th, 2007
Hi all,
I`m looking for a decent all in one device that uses compatible inks. I
understand the risks involved with this, and would much rather buy a new
printer with the savings made on a few changes of cartridge :-)
Anyway, the basic requirements are that the printer can print good quality
photos and text/documents. I have a good laser printer for serious black
and white work. A duplex unit would be nice, but not essential. I`d much
prefer a new printer than a second hand one (for obvious reasons :-) ). I
have a Pixma MP750 (that doesn`t work :-) ) and really like the fact that it
has 2 paper trays, which would be a nice feature in a new printer, but not
essential.
Does anyone have any good suggestions? I`ve had a few Canon printers and
been very happy with them, I`ve had a few dud Epson printers and would
prefer to avoid the Lexmarks and HP`s that have a print head in every
cartridge. I don`t enjoy refilling carts, I`d prefer to be able to just buy
carts to put into the machine :-)
Thanks in advance for your help.

I bought my parents an HP C6180 recently. That does not have
the print head as part of the cartridge, as far as I could see.
The unit seems quite good, except I haven't been able to try the
fax part yet (the day after I bought it, a tree brought down their
phone line, and I haven't been round to set that up since it was
repaired).
On the down side, there's a ton of driver software for it, and
it takes ages to install under Windows. The USB interface won't
downgrade to USB1.1, which is what the ports on their old
computer turned out to be. Printing via the network seems OK,
although I'd reinstalled the drivers about 3 times before I got
it working. (Tip: don't let it know about any DNS servers.)
I didn't try the WiFi interface.
I don't know if 3rd party cartridges are available. They haven't
used up the initial small ones which come with it, and I did
pick up a spare set of HP ones at the same time (which also came
with 150 sheets of 6x4 photo paper).

Best bet will be a Canon. The MP600 is the best value. Newer models do have
a chip on the ink tank, but it can be bypassed pretty easy.
High quality compatible ink is readily available, as is low quality ink.
This model will be much like the one you have.

Compatible is really a meaningless term. It can mean many things. All
of the relabelers claim their generic ink is compatible. Read all of
the problems in this ng about clogging, fading, and results that do not
rival the OEMs.
If you print a great deal you may be able to do enough to economically
come out on top. However, you will also have to accept a higher
probability of fading and lower quality results.
It is best since you intend to use low quality ink that you get a
separate scanner so that does not go to the junk heap when the printhead
clogs. If you need standard format as it appears you do then the Canon
IP4300 may be a good choice.

Nobody makes generic ink that meets the patent requirements of the new Canon ink. I do not even see written claims that they do. Have you found a statement by any refiller that This ink meets all of the requirements of the CL8 ink.

Out of interest, why would I pay any attention to the postings of an ink

I`m just really curious as to why he constantly feels the need to try and
shill "real" inks, to people who have stated that they don`t want to use
those inks. If I get a Canon and refil the carts myself then after 2-3
refills, even if the printer stops working I can buy a new one with the
money saved on inks. If I want to print a photo the last place i`d do it is
on a home inkjet - expensive and slow, and prone to fade. I get them done
at a real photo printing place on real photo paper :-)

Intelligent people who are also professional photographers (no on both counts from what I read of your posts) know that they can edit and modify a photo in PS and then produce a better print that will last as long as any photo lab on their own machine. It is not slow unless you are just a snapshooter. Snapshooters do not produce any art. They do not need decent cameras and they do not even need computers.

What has the occupation of someone got to do with the fact that using an
inkjet to produce photo prints ends up taking longer to print and fadeing
sooner than having them done using a real photo printer on real photo paper?
And I do find it quite amusing that you have the gall to try and call
someone else unintelligent. If you had any intelligence at all you`d have
realised that you`re wanted in this newsgroup about as much as you where
wanted by your parents - we`d all happily see you get thrown out of a plane
to get you and your idiot ramblings to stop.

In that case it is quite obvious that no money was saved. And you had a
shorter life of the print due to fading and had to accept quality that
was not as good.

So you claim to be intelligent, and manage to completely cock-up the quoting
in your post - replying to something posted some time ago rather than the
new reply I had just made? And you state that "it is quite obvious that no
money was saved" - can you please cite the relevant figures to show the
amount I saved by using compatible carts, compared to the amount I spent on
a new printer? I can`t see where I posted the figures you`d need to be able
to draw that conclusions - please feel free to enlighten us as to how you
managed to draw your conclusion with essentially none of the required facts
available.

I know I shouldn`t feed the troll (who seems to have been living on lead
pipes going from his mental abilities) but I really was intrigued to see
what the answer to my question would have been. Funnily enough he`s shut up
now he can`t possibly win an arguement :-)
