Anyone know the difference between the c-m-y color versions of the Canon
BCI-3e and BCI-6 cartridges?

So... to acheive the proper color from the 4 color printers, the
shades or range of ink gamut is a bit diffrent than a printers range
that includes the photo cyan and magenta.

So the way they mix will vary slightly as the 4 color printer will
rely on diffrent information and amounts of ink where a 6 color
printer may not have to mix the same shade.

I was told that if you take bci 6 ink and replace it with bci 3e there
will be noticable difference in output but you can a bci 6 and use it
for bci 3e without much difference.

bottom line is, the inks are formulated differently because the mixes
will be different concentrations.

It would not be recommended. It would not hurt anything but if a
slight variance doesnt bother you then it wouldnt hurt a thing.


about the black.... I belive peoples biggest gripe about the 960 black
text is the speed. Under high resolution scans and 10x lupe, there is
no noticable differences in text quality. As a matter of fact, the
950/960 would have the ability of producing full 4800x1200 text output
where the 850/860 is limited to 600.. so thats something to think
about.

Its just the speed that is the main factor but you can print in draft
mode with excellent quality on the 960 and its very fast.

I have used them interchangeably between my i950 and MP730 without any
noticeable difference so I think they are identical in their chemistry and
color. The blacks, however, are different since one is dye base and the
other pigment base and are, therefore, not interchangeable.

The way I understand it, 4-color printers use the three primary colors to
produce a photo black (which is not a true black) and the pigmented black
is used only to produce laser-like text because it is not compatible with
the die-based colors.
6-color printers have a photo black which is compatible with the die-based
colors and therefore do not have to combine colors to produce a black. As a
consequence, some feel they do not produce text as well as printers with
pigmented black cartridges. These two types of black inks are not
interchangeable!

I have an i850 4 color printer. It uses the CYM colors to print photo
gray (up to 80% gray) and uses the black when gray is above 80%.
This is easy to observe by printing a black gradient and looking at
it with magnification.
