I just got a coupon in the mail as a result of the HP
Laserjet class-action settlement (see
http://laserjet.classaction.hp.young-america.com). I sent
the lead counsel for the class the following E-mail message,
to which I doubt they'll respond:
From: Jonathan Kamens <jik@kamens.brookline.ma.us>
To: hpmultifeed@wilentz.com
Subject: $20 vs. $60 minimum purchase for Laserjet settlement
I just received my $10 rebate certificate. I have a number of
questions about it:
1) The proposed settlement on your Web site mentions nothing about a
$10 rebate certificate; it mentions only $70, $30, and $20 rebate
classes. Where did the $10 class come from?
2) It says that the rebate is on "any media" but does not explain what
"media" is. Does paper count? How about toner cartridges?
3) The big block box says "minimum media purchsae of $20" and the
coupon itself says "with a media purchase of $20 or more," but the
fine print says "showing a media purchase of $60" and "minimum
purchase of $60." So, which is it, $20 or $60?
Frankly, the fact that I have to ask these questions proves that your
handling of this settlement has been rather sloppy. If you're going
to take a bunch of consumers for a ride so that you can collect hefty
legal fees from a major corporation the least you could do is make the
ride a smooth one.
