Does the online Ink level utility tell me the true
level or is it just a ballpark guess-imation?

It is an average but pretty accurate.

Saftymom123,
There is still ink in the cartridge when the utility shows empty.
Some suggest that to utilize all of the ink in the cartridge, to purchase
a chip resetter to reset the cartridge to show that the cartridge is fill
and then run the printer until the cartridge runs out. I suggest you not try
this. This may extend the life of the cartridge, but could cause perminate
damage to the printer by causing an air lock which could cause the print
head to burn out when trying to print with no ink in the print head.

When my ink warning light starts flashing, I normally just continue to
use the printer. Eventually, it will stop printing with an error. That's
when I change the cartridge. I may change it earlier if I have a long
print job and don't want it to run out in the middle of it.

The flashing light tells you that you are getting low. You should continue
to print until the printer stops.
