I have an Epson Stylus Photo R300. While running a nozzle check and
error message appeared and the error light began blinking
continuously. Message said "service required, printer parts are at end
of service life". I contacted Epson support and they said it was
because of "failure of non-user replaceable parts" and I needed to
have it serviced.

Anybody know what kind of parts they are talking about?

I suggest that it it's the waste ink sponge. It's where the 50% of the ink
goes that is used to clean the printheads. Search google for home solutions
or take to a dealer. Costs about £18 in UK.

All inkjet printers have waste ink pads that hold the ink used in the
cleaning cycles that help to keep the heads clear.

When that ink pad gets to a certain point, the printer will shut down to
prevent the ink from leaking out of the printer. Epson is pretty
conservative with the numbers, so usually you can reset the printer once
and run another cycle before worrying, although I suggest people who do
a reset to place the printer on some absorbent paper with plastic sheet
under those sheets to protect furniture should the pad fill and begin to
leak out of the printer.

You can also move the waste ink tube out of the printer into an external
bottle with an extended tube so that when the bottle fills you can
replace it, rather than have to replace the ink pads when they fill on
the second reset, which can be costly.
