- Getting printer status from HP's IEEE 1284 device ID string

Hello,
does anyone know how to get the meaning of the very long "S:" string
returned by HP as IEEE 1284 device ID for, say, HP 5550 printer?
The one that I get is something like 0380008084001000002c14e0000c250002f
