Monitor

Hi, My 17inch KDS monitor keeps switching from 32 bit to 8bit. The
driver is NVIDIA Ge Force2MX/MX 400. When I reboot, it comes up OK
then goes dark and comes back up in 8 bit. I have XP withSP3. The
problem came before SP3. Any help would be appreciated because this
is a pain to keep changing.

What kind of ink do you use in your monitor?

Have you tried uninstalling the monitor, then reinstalling the monitor with
the latest XP video drivers?

#1 This has nothing to do with printers... try posting to the proper
newsgroup.
#2 Microsoft never released an "official" SP3 for winXP... so you may not
have wanted to install it at all.

I just checked, they only appear to be releasing XP SP3 RC2. Windows update
has no SP3 final release at this time.

Although, it was released on April 1, 2008, which might make some people
suspicious, Service Pack 3 for XP is an official MS product.

From MS's website:

Overview
Windows® XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all previously released
updates for the operating system. This update also includes a small
number of new functionalities, which do not significantly change
customers’ experience with the operating system. This white paper
summarizes what is new in Windows XP SP3.

However, he did mention that the problem occurred pre-updating to SP3.

My guess is something you are running, either a game, program of utility
are running in 8 bit graphics mode, or you have a built-in software
utility from your graphics card which may be switching the card on you,
either at the request of something, or due to some conflict. You may
need to remove and reinstall the the video drivers.

It is also possible a hardware problem has developed. Make sure the
cabling from the computer to the monitor is well inserted and stabilized
with the screw-downs, and a good quality cable, and that your video card
is well installed in the computer. This could still be an electronic
failure in the monitor or your video card. Also make sure your AC power
cable to the power bar or the wall is well inserted.

What I meant to say was... Microsoft didn't release an "official" SP3
"final" for winXP.... they have only a RC2... which could have bugs....
install at your own risk. Installing anything from Microsoft as soon as it
is released is a risky move, anyone knows this. Wait for the final release
and even wait some time after that to see what the reviews come back saying
about it.

Technet reported SP3 release candidate 2 back on February 21st.

On March 6, 2008, XP SP3 release candidate 2 Refresh was provided and at
that time they indicated the final version would be released "in the
first half of the year".

The link I provided is not for the software itself, but for the .pdf
overview of the release, so it is possible the actual final version is
not yet released.

The link I provided below is not to XP SP3, but to the overview pdf file
which discusses it. The latest version of SP3 I have found is Release
Candidate 2, Refresh, not the final version, which was published on
March 6th, 2008
