I think that's a massive underestimate given current birth

Hadn't noticed this, but if so it's not good news, especially in light
of Adobe's track record with regard to releasing new versions of its
reader for Unix-like platforms.
I've been moving my own Web-published stuff from PostScript to PDF,
in the assumption that the latter was more likely to be viewable to
people on all platforms. Going back to PostScript -- I'd think it
would be polite to tell people what to do if their computers don't
know what to do with a .ps file? Advice? I seem to remember that
there *are* free-of-charge PostScript viewers for most popular
platforms, but I suspect most Windows users won't have one installed
and so would need to be pointed to .... what?

I think it depends on what you are using to create pdfs. If you use
ps2pdf or pdflatex there shouldn't be any problem reading your pdfs
with any reader. The same goes for OpenOffice.org.

Thanks, but that really wasn't my point -- I was thinking more
along the lines of "how can I help make PostScript a more widely-used

Ok, I guess I missed the point. I know of only one viewer for Windows
(GSView). Who do you want to make it more popular for, everybody or
students and scientists?

Good question. Probably "students and scientists" covers almost all
people who would be likely to have an interest in what I Web-publish,
but if switching from PDF to PostScript is meant as a political
statement of sorts, then I guess the answer is "everybody".
Only one viewer for Windows, huh? Wow. Well, one is enough,
I guess, and that makes it easy ....

The program already mentioned, GSView (gsview32) from Ghostgum is quite
good, I use it when on Windows. It can also open and save locked PDF
files which is very useful.
PDF files are OK so long as you generate ones that use old versions of
PDF. Many programs can read those.
I think offering both ps and pdf is a good move. Those who don't know
ps can use the pdfs, and those that do can use ps which normally
provides better printed output.

I found another one, but I have no idea how it is
(http://www.rops.org/). I use gsview under Windows and there are a lot
of choices on UNIX. I think people favor pdf also for being smaller. I
know that ps files were usually provided as gzipped files
(<filename>.ps.gz) to make them smaller. There is another format that
minimizes the size of a file for online viewing, it's called DJVU and
the software is available as both a browser plugin and as a standalone
application http://www.djvuzone.org/. I don't use it because I don't
think that it's too widespread.
