Hi Stephen, thanks for the response.

I have written some small Visual Basic applications, and Java
applications before in the past for the office (Web browser based), but
never using API's (as far as I'm aware!). Can someone advise if API's
are written for a particular programming language, or can they be used
by anything?

I've had a Google, and came up with this on the web,

which seems like it could help me. But this is only a list of packages
and classes for Java. Would I need source code to make these work, or
can I somehow access these through binary files stored somewhere on the
machines? There appear to be methods referred to in this web page that
would give me access to things like the caller ID so I could then go on
and do something simple with it.

I'd love to have a go at tackling this problem, but am aware I'm perhaps
a little out of my league! However if someone could give me a couple of
pointers to tackling it I'd appreciate it.
