Can a 1230 act as DHCP server?
Posted by David Williams on April 29th, 2005

Hello all. I was wondering a 1230 access point can
act as a DCHP server handing out private Ips to wireless clients
then using one external gateway IP to reach the internet?

Something like this

--[private Ips] like 192.168.100.x/24 **-[AP(1230)] --* ---140.30.3.0/24 ---[Internet]
Thanks,
David

No.

The IOS of the APs cannot do NAT overload nor IP routing.
It's a transparent bridge. The IP address of the BVI1 interface is for
managing only.

Hi

a cisco 1200 access-point works like a bridge, not like a router. Therefor
it can not act as a DHCP server nor can it NAT to the Internet.

I may be missing something here but ...

try typing "ip dhcp pool ?" and have a look at the options

I think you will find that serving out dhcp is a feature on the 1231
at least.

Hope this helps !
