Cisco 877 cabling
Posted by Andre Wisniewski on June 3rd, 2008

Hi all

I've some questions regarding cabling my Cisco 877 to my DSL line. Router gets not in
sync whereas my fritz.box is in sync within seconds.

Is it possible to connect my Cisco to my splitter or has it to be connected directly
to my line?

If it's possible what is the pin layout? In this case i have to use another cable
than the delivered magenta one. The magenta one has two RJ11 plugs whereas my
splitter has a RJ45 jack.

Thanks in advance

Hmmmm. I have seen a few mentions of fritz.box. I need to look into it.

I am running a Cisco 1841 and a motorola dsl modem. I don't have an ATM
module.

I would presume you connect it directly to the line, just like you would
with a regular DSL modem.

Again I believe you should run the RJ11 straight into the appropriate
connector.

A howto you might find interesting:

I used a modified version to setup the 1841. I can post my config if you
would like.

In fact what the heck?

Thanks Charles

Cisco 877 has one and i have to use it. With an external modem i had to do pppoe
on ethernet which 800 series does not support.

But do i have to? If i have to connect it without use of an splitter it would
not be possible to do phone calls, right?

I try to clearify my question

Cisco cable: RJ11 ----- RJ11
Cisco 877 ADSL Port: RJ11

Splitter, Modem ... : RJ45
Phone Jack: TAE

I built an cable RJ45 (splitter to) RJ45 (fritz.box) and used PIN 4 and 5 which
worked well.

For my router to splitter (if possible) i built RJ45 (splitter) PIN 4 and 5 to
RJ11 (Cisco) PINs 3 and 4 with wich i got no sync.

Right got that. I was just mentioning that I don't have any direct
experience with an integrated ATM module setup.

Well. I have AT&T DSL in the United States, and have also had Verizon
DSL. I setup a splitter on every other jack/device except what the modem
is connected to. This is what the literature that comes with the modem
says to do. I imagine there is an online version of the same.

This allows voice/data at the same time.

Got it.

What is TAE?

OK.

Well again the literature I got from the phone company says to put a
splitter on everything but the DSL jack.

However why did it work with the Fritz box? Very interesting. You got me
there.

Are you aware of the fact, that the Cisco 877 has a ADSL over POTS
modem? That means on nearly all lines in Germany it won't work.

For details see:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/coll...d8028a976.html

Especially:

876: ADSL over ISDN (ADSL2/ADSL2+ Annex B)
877: ADSL over analog telephone lines (ADSL2/ADSL2+ Annex A and Annex M)

Even if you have only an analog line, the Annex B is used in Germany.

You have to connect the Cisco router to the splitter.

Only the inner two pins are used. If you use the RJ11 cable, it should
work as the other pins are unused anyway.

But what to do if i only have one jack for POTS *AND* DSL? Don't know how it is
realized in the US, but that's the way it is in Germany. Every documentation
tells to install splitter between jack and Modem/Phones.

Maybe some strange pin layout on the Cisco port. Any idea? If i knew it assured
i'd be able to build the correct cable.

So, i have to use 876 instead of 877 even though i have an analog line?

Thought so.

I was right with that, too.

Yes, i think so. You could check which standard is used by the Fritzbox
which works (maybe there's a label or something on it) - i guess it is
Annex B (ADSL over ISDN). If so, the Cisco device must be the same type
- in your case the 876.

Just an addition, please see

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annex_A

Especially the text related to "Verbreitung":

Germany is the only country where only Annex B is used - regardless if
you have an ISDN or analog line.

This is more Deutsche Telekom related not country related.
In Croatia we also have Annex B over ISDN or analog.
