- LinkSys wireless router Security ?
- Posted by ChrisGW on March 6th, 2007
I would like to set some security for my wireless router, so no one can sit
outside my house and use my connection, but I can not figure out how. I did
change the password to access the router. Got rid of ADMIN.
Thanks for your help

or WPA/TKIP . You'll find these options in the wireless
advanced section somewhere in the router configuraton.
WPA is considered a little safer than WEP, but both are far better
than having nothing at all. Where I'm located
(in an apartment) on my "site survey" page of the wireless
nic configuration program, I can see 6 - 8 other networks
and approx half use WEP while the other half uses WPA.
With WEP, you provide a 10 digit hexadecimal key,
for example 0f d5 98 23 b8
(Hexadecimal includes 0-9 and a-f)
When this is set in the router, all you have to do is
go to each pc in your wireless network and enter the exact same key
in the wireless configuration program in the authentication and
security area, choose WEP and enter your key key in the proper place,
save it and you'll be able to connect.
WPA / TKIP uses a longer variable length key, and it works in a
similar way. Choose WPA/TKIP in the router, set the key -
I chose something like
thi#sis$a#reaso%nabl$ysec&ureke^y
save, and then enter the same key in each pc's wireless configuration
but this time choose wpa/tkip as the method used and enter the
key in the proper place.
Hope this helps -

Unless you need it I'd disable the SSID broadcast, as long as you already
have everything setup you won't need to broadcast your network making it
less likely to be compromised.
