Please help me install this Wireless notebook card!
Posted by drbmaxwell@gmail.com on September 4th, 2005

I can usually figure stuff out..*but* trying to install a Wireless G
notebook card on my laptop is giving me the fits. Here is where I am so
far:

First I bought a Netgear 54Mbps Wireless PC card(WG511) and router. I
got the router hooked up and working. I then attempted to install the
card into the cardbus slot. Despite whatever I did it would not
work...kept getting an "error code 10" message after each attempted
software install. I looked online and the web is fraught w/ folks
having the same problems. Despite following some of others
suggestions(and installing updated software), I couldn't get it to
work....so....

Next, I buy a Belkin Wireless G Plus notebook card. I try to install
this and it first appears all is well....then I get an "error code 1".
I uninstall and try again, and this time the software install goes
through OK....but I can't get connected to the router...it does not
recognize an available signal from my router. There are 2 lights on the
notebook card... a green one(that lights if the card is receiving
power...and this is lit!), and another that lights if there is network
activity..and this is not lit!

Finally, to trouble shoot, I brought home my laptop from the
office...and it instantly found the router signal and *bam* I was
surfing the 'net. I also took my home laptop to my office..and, again,
it would not find an active network signal!!??

The notebook I am installing the WiFi card on is an older laptop
c.1998(Toshiba Satellite 2545XCDT), and I have never used the cardbus
slot. I am wondering if there is somewhere in the depths of the
notebook that I need to turn something on/off to get this thing to
work???

Oh, and LASTLY, I purchased a Belkin USB network adapter card
today...and that WORKS!!! w/ no problems. It found the WiFi signal
easily! I would rather use the cardbus adapter b/c it is supposedly
faster w/ a better distance range, but will resign myself to the USB if
I have to.

Can anyone help me out???
Thanks,
B
