- Setting WS-2950-24 to full duplex
- Posted by Guy DeStefano on December 11th, 2004
Current system is ( DSL Modem ---> PIX 501 ---> WS 2950-24 )
(1). WinXp reports local area connection as speed 100.0 Mbps
(2). PIX 501 front light shows position (1), which is the cat5 cable
going from PIX to WS 2950 with 100 MBPS light ( on - green ).
(3). Front panel lights on the WS 2950 show ( on - green ) lights of
SYST & STAT only. Shouldn't Duplex and Speed also
be ( on - green ) to signify full duplex and 100 Mbps
(4). Purchased WS 2950 a few weeks ago, and have done the
original express setup only. Have not made any changes.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Have you set the inside interface on the PIX 501 to be 'auto' ?
As I recall, the default is one of the fixed values, which would
mean that autonegotiation would not happen and the 2950 would use
the default for when you cannot negotiate, which is 10 Half.

Walter;
Thank you very much for the reply.
I listed out my PIX settings,
I have:
interface ethernet0 auto
interface ethernet1 100full
nameif ethernet0 outside security0
nameif ethernet1 inside security100
global (outside) 1 interface
Thanks Guy

I re-checked and I found that the 501 always shows "100full"
for the inside interface, and that really the inside interface
ports are always autonegotiate. If there is a problem with
negotiation, then, it would have to be on the 2950 side, not
the 501 side as I implied earlier.

Walter;
Thanks again for your search and checking. I just finished
trying to change the 100full to auto, and have also come
to the same message as you. I purchased the 2950 new,
and it did not come with any documentation. I have sent off
to Cisco for the docs, and guess will have to wait until it arrives.
At that time, I will see what can be or needs to be changed,
to make it auto sensing.
Thanks again, Guy

Cisco devices these days come with at most a quick install guide
and a CD of documentation. The documentation is all online. Go here:
