Terminal Server
Posted by Charles Ferland on August 12th, 2004

Hello,

I blew my budget on Cisco devices and have little left for a Terminal
Server in my home lab.

I'm thinking of buying a 2511 with Octal cables but it's still
expensvie for what's it's ask to do.

Is their an alternative Terminal Server device (black box) that I
could connect my Cisco routers to?

Thanks,

Charles

I bought an old 8-port (serial version) Shiva LanRover - in it's previous
life it was a modem server for 8 external dial-in/out modems connected to
it. Cost me $80 IRRC.

I'm partial to Lantronix. I've never used them for Cisco, so not sure of
the pin out, but the good folks at Lantronix are nice to work with. I'd bet
they'd help you there.

You can probably find a decent one on ebay (ETS8P or ETS16P) for cheap.

Linux on a cheap PC with built-in serial ports, addtional two port IO card
and four ports. Or can get a multiport card for more ports than four but
will require drivers. Linux may have drivers and recognize some, but most
major brands there should be drivers avaialbe somewhere if not.

I think there are several opensource terminal server like programs out there
to run on linux.

I was looking into this and wanted to setup one myself, however had to put
on hold due to other priorities the big boss wanted done (the wife!)
