Why would I want to build VTP domains instead of using VTP transparent mode?
Is there a benefit to using VTP domains? Is there a benefit to using
transparent mode?

VTP allows a group of switches to share VLAN information. A switch
configured as transparent will forward any VTP advertisements received but
will not act on them. That is it will not change it's VLAN information
based on VTP advertisements. If you don't mind configuring VLANs on all of
your switches individually then don't bother with VTP. It makes my life
easier so I use it. I do use transparent in unusual situations where I
specifically do not want any of my normal VLANs imported.

The following is an extract form Cisco doc :

http://cco.cisco.com/en/US/products/... king_protocol

There are pros and cons to VTP's ability to make changes easily on a
network. Many enterprises prefer a cautious approach of using VTP
transparent mode for the following reasons:

It encourages good change control practice, as the requirement to
modify a VLAN on a switch or trunk port has to be considered one
switch at a time.

It limits the risk of an administrator error, such as deleting a VLAN
accidentally and thus impacting the entire domain.

There is no risk from a new switch being introduced into the network
with a higher VTP revision number and overwriting the entire domain's
VLAN configuration.

It encourages VLANs to be pruned from trunks running to switches that
do not have ports in that VLAN, thus making frame flooding more
bandwidth-efficient. Manual pruning also has the benefit of reducing
the spanning tree diameter (see DTP section).

Which is why vtp is not in use where I work. It's more of a hassle
unless you have 40 switches in your subnet all strung along.

VTPv3 has built-in protections for this, but not 1 or 2. v3 operates
quite differently though,
