I have 2 6509 switches running HSRP. I want to know if they can both be VTP
Servers? they are bouth supporting the same VLAN's.

Hi,

There is only one VTP server in your network.
This is where you administer your VLAN's.
The other switches are either transparant or client.
Why do you need more VTP servers?

Yes they can be both VTP servers... But when you make change to your VTP
domain you have to make this on both.

cisco recommend 2 in their best practice doc:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/...49a4.shtml#cg1

there is a similar doc somewhere for CatOS set ups.

Thanks for the info. Has anybody tried this on 6509's that have been
upgraded to a real IOS and not a CatOS

Nope. It's enough to update VTP database on one server only.

With best regards,
Andrey.

Slight misunderstanding here. Yes, they can both be VTP servers. They
will, however, listen to updates from one another. Thus you only need
to make changes on one of them.

Cisco could definitely document this better.

Actually, I was under the impression from previous lab work that if
changes are made on one server, the server with the lower revision
number will also update with changes. At least in the more recent
code, I seem to remember this was true. Can anyone confirm or deny
this?
