Well, I swore off of HP scanners after the driver debacle with my old
Scanjet. Very expensive scanner/sheet-feeder combo, and they wouldn't
let me download XP drivers, but wanted to sell me a CD. I found an
alternate source, and switched to a Canon when I moved from SCSI.
The other week, I needed a simple, inexpensive scanner for a friend,
and the local Frys was out of the refurbed Canon LIDE scanners I've
had good luck with (cheap, small footprint, single cable, works fine
for occasional use).
They had a cheap HP, and I thought "What the heck?", and picked it up.
I went to install it, and the driver package was 200MB+, with all the
apps and junk that I don't want or need. I went to download the
latest drivers from their web, and all they've got is Rev 1 of the
200MB+ package.
All I need is a TWAIN driver. What the heck are they thinking? Don't
they have anybody work this stuff out?
Long story short - I took it back, ordered the Canon LIDE online,
downloaded the latest driver package, and up it came.
