- Dust problems on Minolta Dual III scanner
- Posted by Richard Silverstein on July 23rd, 2003
I've just purchased the Minolta Dual III (never having owned or used a
film scanner)and dust on negs & in scans is turning out to be a much
bigger problem than I thought. I knew it didn't have ICE & that this
might be a problem but...
The very first neg I looked at in prescan had a couple of huge (at
least in the scan) motes on it. I removed the neg, used a blower (is
that the term?) to blow compressed air across the surface, then
reinserted it...same mote in same place.
I need to learn what folks do to clean their negs. before scanning
(besides using the blower). I'm planning to scan negs that've been
boxed away for quite some time (in some cases for decades). While
they're in boxes, they're not locked away in sealed containers so
there might be considerable dust gathered on them. What else can I
do?

Hello!
I think it was not me: I was thinking to sell my DS3 and buy a Canon
FS4000.
Anyway, I no longer shoot much 35mm (90% medium format now), so I'm
considering selling my DS3 and buying a refurbished Polaroid SS120, or
a Coolscan 8000ED having enough money.
That said, I played with a borrowed LS4000 for a while; a very capable
scanner in my opinion. dICE3 was very interesting (but does degrade
sharpness, in a more decisive way than Nikon's claims IMHO). Price was
too high for a 35mm scanner, at least for me. Never used a Coolscan
IV, sorry!
And yes, dust and scratches are very very annoying with the DS3,
expecially for negative films.
