Epson 3170 dirty glass (inside)
Posted by Graybeard on January 16th, 2004

Just bought the Epson 3170, got home (200 miles from dealer) and discovered
that the glass is fogged on the inside. Epson provides no information on
cleaning - in fact, says not to open unit. Epson further removes itself
from responsibility to their customers by providing NO way to contact them,
except thru an automated phone number.

Can anyone offer suggestion on how to open and clean the glass?

One thing is for sure - I have bought my last Epson product.

Thanks for any help.

Unfortunately, the dirty/hazed glass issue is a persistent problem with
Epson. A mini-FAQ on how to disassemble the 2450 and 3200 scanners is
available for download in the "files" section of the Epson 2450 3200 (and
3170 for that matter) User's group at Yahoo. You might take a look at that
and see if it helps you figure things out.

Epson has a way to contact them on their website. Just go to your scanner
model and there will be a link to technical support. I would think twice of
opening the case. It voids the warranty. Let them replace it for you.
Have you tried scanning with it to see if it is a problem yet?

Thanks for the help guys - I will follow-up.

Yep, I know all about warranties, but a scanner isn't rocket science and
not too complicated. Before retirement, I had a BS EE degree, and an
associate degree in Business Admin, and wrote about 200 books and manuals
(mostly subcontracting) on repair and operation of everything from
submarines, nuclear bomb detectors, and NASA space equipment. By
comparison, this scanner looks simple, but I expect a decent manual even for
a simple piece of equipment.

Thanks again,

I've got a little bit of dirty glass under my 2 year old Epson 1650 photo.
I would like to know how to get to it and clean it up.

I need a dedicated negative and film scanner on a budget...can anyone tell
me what to look for on Ebay?

thanks
