- Epson 4870 Digital Ice Problem
- Posted by Torbjörn Einarsson on November 14th, 2004
I cannot get Digital Ice using Epson Scan on my new Epson Perfection 4870
Photo.
I've dowloaded the latest drivers from Epson (2.32E it says when starting
up), but there is no difference in scan quality of scan speed when enabling
Digital Ice in the Epson Scan software.
However, it works in the accompaning SilverFast SE and I can also get
Infrared Scanning in VueScan (although it does not do as nice removal as
SilverFast).
I've tried this on two different machines with quite different hardware, but
both running Windows XP SP2, and with the same result, no Digital Ice
effect. Actually, to be precise, it has worked 2-3 times out of the total
100 times I've tried with Epson Scan, but I cannot repeat it.
Has anyone else had this type of problem, or knows a fix? Does it work with
SP2 for you?
Thanks,
Torbjörn

Got to wonder about your scanner - I've got the same setup (XP SP2 running
Epson v2.32 with my 4870) and have done heaps of Digital Ice scans with no
probs. Mine does a very nice job - the only pain being it takes a fair bit
longer in Digital Ice mode.
Cheers

with the light "off". You should be able to hear or see the scan head moving
when it is happening. The light isn't really off, it is just that only the
infrared light is on during the second pass.
Another thing to try is getting the demo of Vuescan and see if it will make
the scanner run the second pass.

Are you scanning multiple images? If so make sure that you are not
just selecting DigitalICE for the selected image, you have to select
the parameters for all the images not just the selected one.

OK. Thanks for your comments. It is thus not a general problem with SP2.
Since I have both VueScan and SilverFast running two passes and getting
improvements from the infrared scan, I don't think it is my hardware that is
broken.

Did you get any resolution? I just bought a 4870, have a Mac running
OSX and I can't get Digital Ice to work either, not in the Epson
Driver, nor in Vuescan. The option doesn't even appear.
